Caddisflies
The Owenglin runs off the Twelve Bens through Clifden to the sea — a classic Connemara granite spate river, open for 2026 as a brown-tag fishery. Salmon enter from February; grilse and sea trout follow in summer. As with all these mountain rivers, it is the flood that brings the fish, and fishing it low is rarely worth the walk. Clifden and Connemara permits; the Salmon and Sea Trout State Licence is required. Atlantic salmon and sea trout are managed under IFI's Wild Salmon & Sea Trout Tagging Scheme — many rivers are catch-and-release and harvest is allowed only where a confirmed surplus exists, so check the river's current status before fishing.
EPA kick-sample monitoring of the Owenglin River (2009-2018) confirms mayflies, stoneflies, caddis, midges, blackflies and craneflies, and freshwater shrimp (Gammarus) are all present in the aquatic food base. This is presence evidence from monitored waterbody segments only, not a record of emergence timing, abundance, or a visible hatch on the water.
